Then I added a personal Facebook page, and it opened my eyes to social media's possibilities both personally and professionally. Today when I'm not managing content for Airport Business' Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter accounts, and uploading content to AviationPros.com, I'm managing social media for my photography business, and handling social media for other small businesses in the area. And what I've learned is this: • If your business is not on Facebook, you're missing out on a tremendous marketing opportunity. In my own business, I've found this to be a powerful tool that helps you connect with the right audience to turn them into customers. It's also a great way to educate and problem solve with existing customers. • If you are not on LinkedIn, you're missing the networking boat. When I'm researching an article, I am able to tap into professionals across the globe for insight. Not only that, but I cannot count the number of opportunities that have come my way simply because I knew someone, who knew someone, who suggested I was the one for the job. • Twitter. This has become my new favorite pasttime. Twitter is filled with nuggets of information that I would not get anywhere else, and if I did, I wouldn't get them as quickly. This tool keeps me current with airport and company happenings—in real time! • Instagram. Besides for being a fun way to connect with family and friends, I've learned it's also an amazing and unique opportunity to promote products, services and expand your mobile presence. It's important to ask yourself if your airport is doing all that it can to embrace the techno-social revolution. Today's digitally connected traveler expects airports to be as connected as they are. Check out Roanoke Regional Airport's fantastic new way of reaching customers with "need-to-know" information on Page 18. Find out the 7 Top Marketing and Communications Trends for Airports on Page 6. And learn what concessions, WiFi and social media have in common on Page 20. The possibilities are endless! It's important to ask yourself if your airport is doing all that it can to embrace the techno-social revolution. In the words of a Tweet that came across my Twitter feed recently: "It is time to go digital or go home!" VANCOUVER ACES AIRPORT MARKETING/ COMMUNICATIONS CONTEST For the second consecutive year, Vancouver International Airport is the recipient of the Peggy G. Hereford Overall Award for Excellence in the 2013 Airports Council InternationalNorth America (ACI-NA) Excellence in Marketing and Communications Contest. The Peggy G. Hereford award is the contest's top accolade, and is regarded throughout the airport industry as the highest honor an airport can earn for marketing and communications excellence. The award recognizes overall creativity in communicating the airport's message, effectiveness in connecting with audiences, and the overall scope of the airport's effort in marketing and public relations. Vancouver garnered first place in five categories (annual reports, special events, television advertising, video and film productions, and community outreach) and received 10 awards total.
